Simo Tolvanen
Photographer • Art Director • Graphic DesignerI am a Finnish professional photographer, Art Director, and graphic designer originally from Kuopio, now based in Vantaa with a studio in Helsinki. With over fifteen years of active experience behind the lens, photography is my way of observing the world and connecting with people genuinely.
My work is fundamentally grounded in safer space principles. It is essential to me that everyone I photograph feels valued, comfortable, and completely safe. There is no need to perform or pretend in front of my camera—simply being yourself is more than enough.
Working for over a decade in commercial graphic design—both as a freelancer and in-house designer—gives me a sharp editorial eye as an Art Director. I understand intuitively how imagery integrates into cohesive brand identities and larger publications.
My visual signature is defined by a timeless, cinematic quality. I frequently capture images using original 1960s and 1970s vintage lenses, intentionally bypassing harsh digital sharpness in favor of organic depth, character, and soul.
Comprehensive visual design and photography
Combining expertise in photography, art direction, and graphic design allows me to act as a complete creative partner. Whether crafting commercial brand imagery, editorial portraits, artist promotional kits, or documentary wedding stories, I design every frame to evoke genuine emotion and complement its final context effortlessly.
While operating primarily in the Helsinki metropolitan area (Helsinki, Vantaa, Espoo), I travel frequently for assignments across Finland, Europe, and Japan. In my free time, I dedicate myself to travel, street photography, and self-published photo zines.

Photography, Pricing & Visual Strategy FAQ
How much does professional wedding photography cost?
Wedding photography pricing depends on the scope of coverage—ranging from focused portrait sessions to full 12+ hour documentary packages. High-quality wedding photography is a lasting investment. Contact me directly to receive the full pricing guide for your date.
Is video included in wedding photography packages?
Yes. My full-day wedding coverage packages include a curated 2–3 minute cinematic highlight film alongside the photo gallery. I capture motion seamlessly throughout the day, recording true atmosphere without requiring a separate video crew.
What factors into a commercial photographer and Art Director's rate?
The fee reflects far more than time spent on location. It encompasses pre-production planning, creative direction, medium-format and vintage gear provision, insurance, and intensive post-processing. Image selection, retouches, and bespoke color grading take several times longer than the live shoot.
Where is your photography studio located, and where do you work?
My studio space is located in Meilahti, Helsinki, ideal for portraits, artist branding, and controlled product setups. I also shoot regularly on location across Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa, and the surrounding capital region, as well as in Kuopio and throughout Finland.
Why do you use vintage camera lenses alongside modern equipment?
I pair modern medium-format sensors with rare 1960s–1970s vintage lenses. These heritage optics render skin tones softly and create organic background depth and cinematic contrast that modern clinical lenses cannot replicate.
How do you ensure equipment reliability and handle unexpected emergencies?
Reliability is paramount. All images are recorded simultaneously to dual card slots for instant backup, and secondary camera bodies are always on set. In case of an extreme medical emergency, I draw upon my professional network to secure a fully qualified replacement photographer with a matching visual style.
What are the advantages of hiring an Art Director for brand photography?
With an extensive background as an Art Director and graphic designer, I plan imagery to serve your broader brand ecosystem. During the shoot, I actively account for website grid layouts, negative space for typography, social ratios, and color harmony.
How do you ensure a comfortable and relaxed environment during shoots?
I adhere strictly to safer space principles across all portrait and brand sessions. I maintain an unhurried, respectful atmosphere with clear communication, guiding subjects naturally rather than enforcing rigid posing.
How does your street photography background influence commercial work?
Serving as Chairperson of the Finnish Street Photography Collective, my observational skills are central to my commercial work. Years of capturing fleeting street moments allow me to react swiftly during fast-paced events, weddings, and industrial shoots.
What is the image delivery timeline and how do usage rights work?
Final edited high-resolution images are delivered within 1–3 weeks via a secure online gallery. Commercial assignments include extensive commercial licensing rights. Wedding and portrait clients enjoy full personal usage, sharing, and print rights.
