Actors' Casting Headshots and Creative Studio Work – Elsa & Aino
I met actors Elsa and Aino at a film festival. Chatting over the event, it quickly turned out they both needed up-to-date casting headshots for upcoming roles. We scheduled a studio session, agreeing in advance to leave plenty of room in the schedule for looser, experimental shooting once the official portraits were taken.
We kicked off the afternoon by covering the essentials: clean, professional headshots tailored to casting directors. With those foundational shots secured, we moved on to the most engaging part of the day—experimental visual expression.
A Different Lighting Approach: Layered Light from a Single Angle
For a photographer, the studio acts like a laboratory—a place to test how light behaves. This time, I wanted to try an unconventional lighting arrangement. Instead of positioning key and fill lights at different angles, I layered two distinct light sources coming from the exact same direction.
This layered approach gave the images remarkable depth: a harder key light carved out structure, sharpness, and skin texture, while a softer modifier filled in the shadows precisely where needed. In the process, I found a new favourite setup for future shoots.
The Character of Vintage Optics vs. Modern Precision
I continued my habit of pairing contrasting lenses, shooting both with authentic 1960s–70s vintage glass and razor-sharp modern prime lenses:
- Vintage optics: Added an organic softness, classic micro-contrast, and cinematic character to the expressive shots.
- Modern lenses: Captured crisp texture, subtle eye catchlights, and fine micro-expressions for the official casting portraits.
These two approaches complement each other exceptionally well. In actor portraiture, translating emotion, character, and narrative through the lens remains the core focus.
From Studio to Rooftop – Sunset Over Helsinki
We wrapped up an intense, creative day by stepping outside the studio walls. Climbing up to the building's roof, we watched the evening sun dip over the Helsinki skyline. The soft, warm natural light served as a natural counterpoint to the controlled lighting setup indoors.
The shoot was a great reminder of what happens when you balance a clear practical goal (casting headshots) with open-ended artistic freedom. The result was both a versatile portfolio for the actors and a strong series of creative portraits.
